[...] When on the road, anywhere and everywhere, we should notice, not just look. Smell, not just breathe. Listen, not just hear. We will be able to find interestingness within the known and the unknown, and this is where I suspect we will find real meaning in our voyage. It’s a very personal decision of each and everyone of us how far we want to go, but as long as we are alive, we will always be part of this immense travel community called humanity. This post is my entry to become the next Flightster travel writer. I decided to think about the deeper meaning of travel on this occasion, and hope you enjoyed the resulting post. Now, for a change, you might be up for some lighter travel writings! Please feel invited to read my post on eating the whole cow, and nine other things I learned in Colombia! [...]

Jean and Milo, hopefully I was brave and demonstrated wisdom - I’m afraid I’m not, but working towards it! ;) Thanks very much for your kind words!

Jean, is you father from around here? I’ve met a handful of Colombians in Germany, and it was always a pleasure - a people so energetic and full of kindness!

Milo, I actually still eat bananas. I had a pause after my unvoluntary diet, but once being back here, I could enjoy them again. Pure sweetness, healthy, and still very cheap - what’s not to like? ;)

Nate, you are right about the more general notion of "unkind people". The problem is that tourists generally represent their country - if they want to or not. If your an American behaving badly, your fellow countrymen coming after you will have a hard time, no matter if they are the nicest persons on earth. And as always, bad memories stick. So maybe I should call it "Ignorant tourists suck", but then, the headline now is more controversial and probably calls the attention! :)

I agree with #6.....although it could be modified to say 'Unkind People Suck.' When I travel, I make it a point not to be arrogant. I try to take the time to learn simple phrases and make an effort to speak some of the local language. I think it's good to try. Also, whether traveling or not, I try to make an effort of treating others how I would like to be treated. I don't know, maybe it's my naturally empathetic nature, but it's always good to treat others with kindness and be open to other views. Although we'd like to sometimes believe this to be true, we are not the center of the universe (i.e. subject/object relation). We are all connected and we can all learn from each other.

Yes Fabian, you are definitely a brave man, and also humble enough to learn the ways of the places you visit and fit in with them instead of being the typical arrogant tourist - I think many people could learn from that.

Bananas are a great snack but living off them sounds hard - do you flinch at the sight of one now?
